An urban planning workshop in Kabul

By Sanam Ahmadi

A recent workshop entitled “Planning Culture and Participation in the Revitalization of Kabul” attracted great interest, particularly among the urban planners among the participants. The aim of the workshop was to record and recognize the wishes and visions of people living in Kabul (especially women).

UCODE (Urban Co-Design Environment), a 3D participation application for urban and traffic planning, was used in the workshop. This application helps to collect meaningful needs for new planning, to communicate existing planning ideas in an understandable way and to obtain opinions on these.

The workshop participants praised the digital tool – it offered them the opportunity to actively participate and express their ideas. Despite or perhaps even because of the novelty of the tool and the unusual situation of being asked about their own needs, the participants were very interested in using the tool.

Overall, the workshop was successful, primarily due to the commitment of the participants. The discussions and comments made it possible to gain important insights into the current problems in the area of technical and social infrastructure. Participants clearly expressed their concerns and using the digital tool proved straightforward and easy to understand for everyone.
