Keeping Ancient Afghan Heritage Alive

By Kai Pflug

According to a recent article by TOLOnews, the Afghan authorities are now taking measures to protect ancient Afghan relics.

Hayatullah Mahajer Farahi, Deputy Minister of Publications at the Ministry of Information and Culture, stated “We do not allow anyone to destroy and smuggle our historical artifacts as in the past”.

Other recent positive developments mentioned in the article include the discovery of 1400 archeological sites in 2023 as well as the drafting of a cultural heritage law that will presumably prevent the sale of ancient artifacts.

Overall, this is a very positive development given the destruction and theft of valuable Afghan relics that was widespread in the recent past. On the other hand, new threats arise – for example, an ancient Buddhist city near Kabul is in danger of disappearing as a Chinese company seeks to access copper deposits.
