Being half German and half Afghan, I have experienced the best of both worlds.
Not only do I have a love for traditional German dishes like potato soup and pretzels, but I also find immense joy in savoring Afghan delicacies such as kabuli, noqhul, and aushak, accompanied by the vibrant sounds and colors of Afghan music and culture. This blend of cultures has truly enriched my life in countless ways.
Varied and colorful food plays an important role in my life, and I have my Afghan side to thank for that. Afghan cuisine is so diverse and rich in flavor and spices, that there is always something new to discover. Would I have ever heard of noqhul, let alone dared to try it, if not for my Afghan roots? Probably not.
Noqhul are caramelized almonds coated in a layer of honey or sugar. They are extremely tasty and addictive! Or kabuli, the festive rice dish served with raisins, carrots, and lamb – a real taste sensation! These culinary experiences have made me more willing to experiment in my own kitchen. I love trying out new recipes and combining different ingredients. Sometimes my experiments end up in a bit of a mess, but I’m always quite proud of what ends up on the table – as is my family.
Music has always been another significant part of my life. Afghan music in particular has something very special about it. It’s loud, lively, and full of energy. Whether it’s a (family) gathering or a quiet evening at home, music has the power to uplift and unite.
The variety of instruments and the unique sounds of Afghan music have inspired me to be open to all kinds of musical styles – from traditional Afghan music to Western pop – my playlist has it all!
In Afghan culture, family is of the utmost importance. This feeling of togetherness and strong bonds is something that I truly appreciate. As the only half-German person in my extended family, fitting in hasn´t always been easy, especially without speaking the language.
Nevertheless, everyone in my family has always welcomed me with open arms. Over the years, these loving experiences have shown me how important family is.
Family celebrations are always something special. There is laughter, eating, and, of course, dancing. Even though it can sometimes be hectic and loud, I love the warmth and chaos that comes with a big family. I really want to pass on these values and this warmth to my own children, because they make life more colorful and richer.
My Afghan heritage has shaped me in so many positive ways. It has opened up a world of culinary delights, fascinating music, and strong family values.
With this in mind, I can only recommend everyone to try something (new) from Afghan cuisine, listen to traditional Afghan music, and most importantly, spend time with your family. (:
Who knows, you might discover a new passion!
